Journals
The contents lists provided for some of
these journals are based on the headings of the articles themselves rather than
the contents pages. Where discrepancies were found, the error generally
appeared to be in the latter. The following items are omitted from contents
lists: reviews (except review articles), obituaries, reports of society
activities (unless containing detailed information on sites), abstracts of
lectures (unless substantial), lists of members, modern poems and fiction.
Short notes such as quotations from old newspapers are generally included, but
not quotations from books unless accompanied by commentary. Punctuation and
spelling have mostly followed the original exactly, but obvious errors have
been corrected, and capitals are not used within sentences except for proper
nouns.

- Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy
The Academy was founded in 1785 to promote the study of Science, Polite
Literature and Antiquities. The Proceedings, comprising papers presented
to the Academy, are correspondingly divided into three sections, A, B and
C. Section C deals with archaeology and related subjects. Latest issue:
Volume 110C (2010). The full texts of articles published in the last four
volumes are available on the Academy’s website to search and download in
full.

The Capuchin Annual was published in Dublin from 1930 until 1977. Although
published by the Capuchin Order, it was not primarily a religious
magazine, as it contained articles of a high quality on a wide range of
literary, historical and artistic topics. It was in book format, with
about 500 pages in each volume.

Advanced Studies. Principal topics are Early Irish literature, linguistics

- Eachtra Journal
Online journal of the Eachtra archaeological consultancy, published four
times a year since January 2009. It includes articles (mainly excavation
reports), miscellanea and notices of events, and an amalgamated index in
'cloud' format, where the size of the letters represents the frequency of

Newsletter of Mills and Millers of Ireland, the soc for the preservation
of traditional and ancient Irish Mills. Published since 2002. The first
nine newsletters were called Mills and Millers of Ireland, then the

- Group for the Study of Irish Historic Settlement
Newsletter
The Group is a multidisciplinary study group which examines the nature and
development of Irish settlement. Membership is open to all interested
people. Its publication was begun in 1970 as the 'Bulletin', later renamed

- The Heroic Age
A fully peer-reviewed academic on-line journal intended for professionals,
students and independent scholars. It focuses on North-western Europe
during the early medieval period (from the early 4th to the 13th century)
and seeks to foster dialogue between all scholars of this period across
ethnic and disciplinary boundaries, including history, archaeology, and
literature. Each issue has a theme. These have included Saints, Folklore
and Anglo-Saxon Attitudes. There is a regular feature called Electronic
Medievalia, on the use of the Web in medieval studies. The Heroic Age
was founded in 1998. Its ISSN is 1526-1867.
The Heroic Age
- Insight: New Perspectives in Irish Studies
An on-line magazine about Irish archaeology, history and more. As an
Internet publication, it goes beyond the bounds of printed media, with new
articles published as they come in, and provision for multimedia
contributions. Subjects range from 'Finding Easter at Knowth' (an
alternative view of solar alignments) to Irish miners in Michigan. There
are now three issues online, but the announcements of events are for 2006,
so things appear to have slowed down.

Newsletter of the Genealogical Society of Ireland. Incorporates The
Genie Gazette (see above). Published since 2006, in annual volumes
made up of 12 monthly numbers. ISSN 1649-7937. Published on the Society's
website in PDF format. The Society also publishes the occasional Irish
Genealogical Sources series; Memorial Inscriptions of Dean's Grange
Cemetery, Blackrock, Co. Dublin, Ireland, Memorial Inscriptions of

A left-wing publication with an editorial 'collective' consisting of Seán

This deals with the archaeology of the province of Ulster. Each issue is
conveniently divided into separate sections for Excavations, Field Survey,
Artifacts, etc. Published since 1894. Current volume: 3rd Series, Vol.59
(2000). ISSN 0082-7355. Honorary Editor, Ulster Archaeological Society,
School of Archaeology and Palaeoecology, The Queen's University, Belfast,
Northern Ireland BT7 1NN. Parts of the First and Second Series are
available on Open
Library as scanned facsimiles in PDF format to read online or
download, or in Kindle format or full text. The latter is converted to
text by software (OCR) and is almost unusable because of the number of

Only one issue of this has been seen, an unnumbered issue, dated 1988. It

- Genie Gazette. Social
Newsletter of the Dun Laoghaire Genealogical Society
Published from 1996 to 2005 (ten volumes of twelve monthly numbers). ISSN
1393-3183. The ‘Social’ was soon dropped from the title, and in 1999 the
Society became the Genealogical Sodiety of Ireland. From 2006 the Genie
Gazette was incorporated in Ireland's Genealogical Gazette (see
above).
- Rathmichael Historical
Record. The Journal of the Rathmichael Historical Society
Rathmichael, a rural parish in the south-east of County Dublin, has an
active historical society which for some years ran an archaeological
summer school. The journal has been published since 1974. All back issues
are available online via a link on the website.

The Dublin Diocesan Historical Record, founded in 1955 'primarily to make
more generally known the sources of Dublin diocesan and parochial
history'. It was published from 1955 until 1964. It was not limited to
obscure liturgical history: one particulatly useful article was Kevin
Danaher's paper on the holy wells of County Dublin in Volume 2 (1958).

Journal of the Skerries Historical Society. Skerries is a small coastal
town in the north of County Dublin. Published since 1998. The most recent

published a bulletin called Laois Heritage. This was superseded by
the Laois Yearbook, which was published jointly by the Laois
Heritage Society Journal and the Dublin-based Laois Society. This was

Ireland Archaeological Society
Volume I of this journal was published in 1894-5, and it continued more or
less annually until 1915, when Volume XVIII was published. It was
suspended then because of wartime conditions. Volume 19, a slim volume of
only 56 pages, appeared in January 1920, but this was not followed up,
obviously because of the lawless state of the country at that time. The
original 18 volumes (1894-1912) are freely available online in PDF format
on the Waterford County Library website.
